The system keeps manufacturing ghosts, then acts surprised when the walls begin to shake.
It takes the undocumented worker’s taxes but not their voice. It releases the prisoner but keeps the sentence alive inside every ballot, job, home, and locked gate. It tells the stateless person that existence requires a paper they were never permitted to possess. It asks the disabled citizen to prove a mind no politician has ever been required to prove. It sweeps the unhoused from the street, destroys their identification, then demands identification before hearing them.
This is how conditions for violence are built—not in one dramatic hour, but administratively. Form by form. Fine by fine. Denial by denial.
The risk of violence grows because institutions have taught people that peaceful instruments are decorative. Violence is neither automatically noble nor automatically illegitimate. At times force is necessary to stop a rogue state or predatory actor. A society that removes every peaceful instrument—vote, court, work, shelter, recognition—should not expect permanent obedience from those it has declared disposable.
Do not call the eruption sudden. Do not call it senseless. The fuse was laid through respectable procedures beneath fluorescent lights: intake rules, court barriers, databases, statutes, leases, and enforcement policy.
